What Is Vaginismus?

Vaginismus is when the muscles of the pelvic floor tighten automatically. This can make penetration painful or impossible. That might include tampons, fingers, toys, or sex with a partner. It can feel like burning, tightness, a sharp sting, or like your body is saying no even when you want to say yes.

It’s not just physical. The body and nervous system are often reacting to fear, stress, past experiences, or pressure. Sometimes, there’s no obvious reason at all. It’s more common than people realise, and with the right support, it’s absolutely treatable.
